Minister Harris launches new Guidebook for Altamont Gardens, Co Carlow.

27 January 16

Minister Simon Harris, Minister of State at the Office of Public Works today (27 January 2016) launched a new Visitors’ Guidebook for the internationally renowned heritage gardens of Altamont, Co. Carlow.

At a ceremony in Dublin Castle, Minister Harris was presented with a first-copy of the Guidebook by Mr Robin Harvey, executor of the estate of the late Corona North. The richly illustrated Guidebook depicts the highlights of the Gardens, including lawns framed by clipped yews, lake, arboretum, exotic shrubs, bog garden, Ice Age Glen, and riverside walks.

Minister Harris, welcoming the publication recalled “the vision and dedication of Mrs North in developing the wonderful gardens and landscape and her generosity in bequeathing the Gardens to the State under the expert care of my Office, the Office of Public Works.”

Minister Harris also remarked that “the Guidebook will make a major contribution to visitors’ appreciation of the Heritage Gardens. With over 50,000 visitors to the Gardens in 2015, I have no doubt that Altamont will make an ever increasing contribution to tourism and employment in Carlow and the surrounding regions”.

An on-going programme of works will provide improved car-parking, toilets/sewage treatment and repairs to the House. Future plans include tea-rooms and a garden exhibition.

Minister Harris particularly thanked Mr Harvey for his assistance in producing the Guidebook and for his role as Executor concluding that “the visitor routes are wonderfully mapped and the guidebook not only recalls the social history of the Estate but also has an appreciation of Mrs. North written by her good friend, Robin Harvey”.
