28 November 17

This Christmas holiday season there is something to entertain everyone at OPW heritage properties – from Christmas markets, to meeting the deer, from story-telling to seasonal flower arranging with the experts, we really have thought of everything.

Some of the country’s best known heritage sites are celebrating the festive season with a wonderful programme of events to suit all tastes. On the 11th and 12th of December Dublin Castle is hosting an evening of Christmas carols and a viewing of the Neapolitan crib in the magnificent Chapel Royal, which will be especially illuminated for the festive season, followed by a glass of wine and a mince pie in the Gothic Room in the beautiful State apartments.

In the lush surroundings of Farmleigh there will be the traditional Christmas market, with storytelling for kids, Christmas carols and musical performers. This year there will also be a special concert with the Velvettes who will ‘Croon for Christmas’ on Tuesday the 19th and Wednesday 20th December in the beautiful Farmleigh ballroom. This festive celebration of the classic era of Christmas songs will include firm favourites from Irving Berlin to Gershwin, Cole Porter to Elvis Presley. This show is the perfect festive event, guaranteed to send you off glowing in the warmth of a lost era in music. Christmas has never sounded so good!

OPW Christmas

This year for the first time, Castletown will host The Castletown House Christmas Village, a spectacular four-day event from 7th - 10th December within the charming surroundings of the historic house. This historic property will be transformed into a wonderland which will include Santa’s Grotto, a cinema playing Christmas classics, a Puppet Panto and puppet-making workshop, a vintage carousel, plenty of food and craft stalls.

Speaking about the festive period Chairman of the OPW Maurice Buckley said, “The OPW has a treasure trove of beautiful historic sites which make the perfect background for family days out this Christmas. We have a wonderful programme of activity for the Christmas holiday period and our staff and guides are looking forward to spreading the Christmas cheer”.
