Mansergh Welcomes Clare River Flood Study

Clare River Study

Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Dr. Martin Mansergh TD, announced today in Claregalway that he has provided funding for works to reduce flooding from the Clare River, Co. Galway, in accordance with the recommendations of the Clare River Flood Study.

Minister Mansergh said: 'I am pleased to announce that, based on the recommendations endorsed by the Joint OPW / Galway County Council Working Group, an extensive scheme of mitigation measures costing in the region of €8m will be implemented',

Dr Mansergh continued: 'The planning process for the scheme will begin immediately, with a view to commencing the substantive works in Summer 2011, subject to satisfactory completion of the planning process'.  However, it is proposed to undertake a number of interim measures in advance of the main scheme.  These include:

· Construction of flood eye at Claregalway Bridge
· Construction of flood eyes at Crusheen Bridge
· Road raising and ancillary works at Miontach South and North
· Channel maintenance and culvert upgrade at Kiniska
· Fill gap in wall at An Mhainistir housing estate
· Provide local embankment at old Nine Arches bridge

The Minister added that: OPW intend to commence the advance works before the end of September 2010.  'There will be full consultation with property owners and other stakeholders in relation to the works',

'I would like to re-iterate my commitment to ensuring the speedy implementation of the scheme', the Minister said.
