Flood Risk Management


The Office of Public Works (OPW) is the lead State body for the coordination and implementation of Government policy on the management of flood risk in Ireland.  The OPW is also the national authority for the implementation of the EU Directive on the Assessment and Management of Flood Risks [2007/60/EC].

Background and Policy: General background information on flood risk in Ireland and flood risk management policy.

Statutory and Regulatory Functions: Information on the statutory and regulatory functions of the OPW in the area of flood risk management, including consent requirements for alterations re watercourses, bridges and weirs.

Catchment-based Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Studies: These Studies examine the causes of significant flooding for the purpose of producing integrated plans for addressing the significant flood risk factors.

Structural Flood Risk Management Measures: The delivery of flood risk management structural measures through flood relief schemes and arterial drainage maintenance

Minor Flood Mitigation Works & Coastal Protection Scheme: This scheme provides funding to local authorities for small scale flood relief and coastal protection projects.

Non-Structural Flood Risk Management Measures: Details of flood risk management non-structural measures, including flood forecasting and warning and how to prepare for flood events.

Information on Past Flood Events: Access detailed information on recorded flood events.

Hydrometric Data: Archived and real time water level data recorded at hydrometric gauging stations nationwide.

Flood Studies Update This research and development programme is developing and improving flood estimation methodologies.
