OPW is endeavouring to replace outdated properties with new, modern office accommodation where possible. This is being achieved through a targeted programme of lease surrenders which; to date; has led to the disposal of numerous obsolete premises and the re-housing of their occupants in modern next generation offices, either under state ownership or lease. This modernisation has several proven benefits. Modern office buildings tend to offer more flexible working spaces and storage solutions, and are more environmentally friendly due to efficient climate control systems and superior insulation. There is also a substantial saving on the cost of maintenance in comparison to older office stock, which can be more prone to age-related problems (e.g. Leaks, electrical, heating issues etc.)
