The Office of Public Works is delighted to launch the 'Kilmainham Gaol Graffiti Website: female experiences of imprisonment during the Irish Civil War' in Kilmainham Gaol on Wednesday 24 September 2014 at 7pm.
This website is a collaboration between the Office of Public Works and the Irish Research Council and aims to provide the public and researchers with access to materials relating to the women held in the gaol during the civil war period (1922-1923).
There is a large amount of graffiti and wall etchings at Kilmainham Gaol and the research, carried out by Dr. Laura McAtackney, School of Social Justice, UCD offers a valuable insight into the role of women during this period. It also provides information on the methods used in identifying and recording graffiti.
Speaking in advance of the launch, Minister Harris said " I am delighted that my Office, the Office of Public Works, continues to collaborate on various projects to enhance our knowledge of Kilmainham Gaol and its important role in our national story. That very little is known about this aspect of our history will make this website a valuable resource for professionals and budding historians alike. The OPW development of the Gaol and Courthouse project as part of the 2016 commemorative programme will also further deepen our knowledge and appreciation of the Gaol as a pivotal part of our history."
The primary sources used for the website were the autograph books passed between the women whilst they were held in the prison and graffiti that remains in the cells and corridors of the West Wing. As much of the graffiti is in a delicate state, and not accessible to the public, the website will allow many members of the public to see this material for the first time.
The website can be accessed at http://kilmainhamgaolgraffiti.com/
