'A Living Tradition': Exhibition of Contemporary Irish Stone Carving - An exhibition at the Pearse Museum, St. Enda’s Park, Rathfarnham, 31 July to 17 August 2014

OPW and The Pearse Museum is delighted to host an exhibition of work by the members of the Lettercarvers Guild of Ireland. The Guild was founded in 2008 to promote the craft of letter design and carving by hand. It supports the development of letter carving skills and design while also encouraging the use of high quality, hand-carved inscriptions on public monuments, artworks, memorials and architectural commissions. A Living Tradition reflects the wide variety of styles and innovative approaches used in the interpretation of the letterform in stone.

It is particularly appropriate that this exhibition take place in the Pearse Museum. The Pearse family business was called Pearse and Sons, a stone carving workshop located on Great Brunswick (now Pearse) St. in Dublin city centre. The work by Pearse and Sons can still be seen in churches, cemeteries and buildings around Ireland and Britain. The pieces on display here reflects this earlier tradition in a contemporary style, acknowledging the work of past masters and setting a template for the future. The exhibition features work by Thomas Glendon, Aileen Anne Brannigan, Richie Healy, Tom Little, Stephen Burke and Cornelia Bakkum McGover.
