Kilkenny Castle celebrates the return of the 'Decius Mus' Tapestries and the launch of the Summer 2014 event programme
Mr. Brian Hayes, TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) was joined today by Mr. Phil Hogan, TD, Minister for Environment, Community & Local Government, to welcome the return of the 'Decius Mus' Tapestries to Kilkenny Castle, following conservation work in Madrid. The Tapestries are among the great glories of the wonderful historic Ormonde Collection at Kilkenny Castle. The 'Decius' suite had been in the ownership of the Ormonde family for over 300 years and was displayed in several of their residences before being acquired by OPW for display in Kilkenny Castle. The centuries took a toll on the delicate fabrics and major conservation was needed. This intricate work was entrusted to Real Fabrica de Tapices in Madrid, one of the leading international conservation specialists in this medium. After three years of painstaking work the Tapestries have returned to their ‘rightful home’ at Kilkenny Castle and again form a highlight of the Ormonde Collection in the Tapestry Room and fabulous Picture Gallery - one of the finest historic and architectural spaces in Ireland.
Speaking at the launch of the exhibition, Minister Hayes said, "I'm delighted to be here in Kilkenny to launch this wonderful exhibition. The Castle is one of the gems of OPW's historic building portfolio and the 'Decius Mus' Tapestries are a magnificent addition to this visitor attraction. Kilkenny Castle plays a very important role in the socio-economic fabric of this city and the success of Kilkenny as a tourism destination owes much to the development and operation of the Castle as a prime visitor attraction. I'm also pleased today to launch the Summer Programme for the Castle, which includes a range of events and festivals to suit all tastes. Kilkenny Castle had nearly a quarter of a million visitors last year and I'm hopeful that we can surpass that figure this year; our programme for 2014 will help us reach that goal."
Also speaking at the launch, Minister Phil Hogan said, "I am privileged to be asked here today to welcome home the 'Decius Mus' Tapestries to Kilkenny Castle. I must say, that after three years of careful restoration they look splendid. And what better place than Kilkenny Castle - itself steeped in history - for them to be hung?"
