6 January 20
Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran T.D., Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief (OPW) today visited Kilkenny Castle today to open the recently installed wheelchair swing in the Castle’s playground. The wheelchair swing was installed in December 2019 and will further enhance the accessibility of the playground. The Minister commented “I am delighted with the installation of this wheelchair swing which is a great addition to the playground. I am committed to enhancing universal access across our sites. I believe it is very important that children of all abilities are able to play together and get maximum enjoyment from these great facilities. I wish the users many hours of happy use in safety and comfort.”
The Wheelchair swing is the latest addition to a renewal project that was undertaken in 2019 which included the installation of a wheelchair accessible roundabout, a sensory wall designed for children with special needs and a new safety surface. These works will enhance the safety, comfort and accessibility of this very popular amenity in Kilkenny City.
While visiting the Castle the Minister was also shown plans for further upgrade works to be carried out by the OPW at the popular heritage site. These include a resurfacing of the central courtyard and the installation of a lift which will enable universal access to the magnificent Long Gallery. Design works associated with these projects are at an advanced stage and it is hoped that they will proceed in early 2020.
