8 February 18

Kevin “Boxer” Moran T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) and Flood Relief attended the meeting of the Inter-departmental Flood Policy Co-ordination Group on Wednesday, 7th February, where he received updates on progress on implementing Government policy in mitigating flood risk.

The Minister said, “Flood risk management is a priority issue for Government to mitigate the damage and costs associated with flooding for our communities and businesses.  The Inter-departmental Flood Policy Co-ordination Group provides for a whole of Government response in relation to flood prevention, protection and preparedness.  Today I received updates on the initiatives that the Government has underway and is planning to address flood risk.  I can confirm that significant progress is being made in implementing Government policy and in supporting households and businesses which are affected by flooding.

The Minister went on to say, “We are seeing major progress being achieved in tackling flood risk.  We have implemented 42 major flood relief schemes which are protecting 9,500 properties and at this time there are 34 schemes underway which will protect a further 11,200 properties.  In addition, we have carried out Ireland’s largest ever assessment of flood risk that has produced the road map for investment by the Government over the next ten years in major flood defence schemes.  The OPWs Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Programme assessment of 300 identified communities, including 90 coastal areas, most impacted by flooding is nearing completion and will be published by my Office over the next few weeks.  At this time, I will announce a prioritised initial tranche of schemes to be advanced to the more detailed project level of assessment.

The Minister concluded, “I wish to acknowledge the trojan work that is being carried out by Government Departments, State Agencies and local authorities in preparing for and in responding to flooding events.  The Government is fully committed to addressing flood risk and is working tirelessly to accelerate the planning and delivery of flood relief solutions for our communities.
