Simon Harris TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) this morning, (21 December), welcomed the eight winners of the OPW Winter Solstice Lottery to Newgrange. Their prize granted them access to the Chamber this morning ready to witness the Winter Solstice but unfortunately the sun was obscured by cloud. Nevertheless, the atmosphere at the Monument is weather-proof and all the visitors enjoyed the unique experience of Winter Solstice. The winners were from the USA, Belgium, England and Ireland. They were joined at the Monument by a large group of media and onlookers, all seeking to share in the excitement of this unique event.

The Office of Public Works is pleased to present this exhibition that showcases the work of one of Ireland’s pioneering photographers, William Despard Hemphill (1816–1902), a native of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. 'Silent Exposure - the Photography of William Despard Hemphill' will be on permanent display in the Main Guard, Clonmel.

Minister Simon Harris congratulates OPW sites included in Lonely Planet's Ultimate Travelist 2015

Simon Harris TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works today (20 August 2015) welcomed the inclusion of two OPW sites in Lonely Planet's Ultimate Travelist 2015.

Lonely Planet has listed the top 500 places to see on the planet and two OPW sites have been included in the publication. Newgrange (Brú na Boinne) has been ranked at Number 224 while the Rock of Cashel is listed as Number 497 in the world as landmark destinations to visit. Lonely Planet has been visiting, assessing and ranking places in the world since 1973. The most recent 2014 figures show that Newgrange had 247,000 visitors and the Rock of Cashel welcomed over 272,000 visitors.

Minister Simon Harris encourages all to enjoy free events at OPW sites during National Heritage Week

Simon Harris, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works today (22 August 2015) welcomed the ongoing involvement of the Office of Public Works in National Heritage Week.

Celebrating 20 years, National Heritage Week, from 22 August – 30 August 2015 is co-ordinated by The Heritage Council and raises awareness and education about Ireland's heritage. This year, the Council is inviting everyone to reflect on Ireland's industrial heritage. On Sunday 30 August 2015, admission to all OPW sites is free, while many of the events on during the week are also free.

Minister Harris announces free entry to Dún Aonghasa

The OPW has worked with the Aran Islands Business Network, Fáilte Ireland and Wild Atlantic Way to bring this initiative to fruition. Visitors who spend a night on Oileán Árainn will get a voucher entitling them to free entry to Dún Aonghasa.

Harris welcomes Celtic Cultural Connections between the Great Blasket Centre in Kerry and Taigh Chearsabhagh Centre on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

Simon Harris TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) today (10 April) welcomed an event today which is effectively the twinning of two cultural centres in Ireland and Scotland with a simultaneous launch of exhibitions in both centres.

The Great Blasket Centre in Kerry will host an exhibition entitled 'The Sgeulacht Hiort - Scéal Hiort - the St Kilda Story' from Taigh Chearsabhagh Arts and Cultural Centre in Lochmaddy on the Isle of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The Taigh Chearsabhagh Arts and Cultural Centre will host an exhibition from the Great Blasket Centre called 'Fairscin Inise', a compilation of historic photos from the Great Blasket which has already been shown in the Blasket Centre.

Simon Harris TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) today (31 January 2015) announced that the Office of Public Works is developing a new service for providing sign language interpretation on tablets at OPW Heritage Sites.

Speaking at the today's launch at Farmleigh House Minister Harris said: "I am delighted to be here today to attend the Irish Sign Language interpreted tour of this wonderful site, as managed by my Office, the OPW.  I wish to thank the Centre for Deaf Studies, Trinity College for partnering the OPW on this initiative.  As the second highest visitor destination in our estate, Farmleigh is popular with Dubliners and all visitors alike and I know the interpreted tour today was enjoyed by all".

Managed by the National Botanic Gardens, the Kilmacurragh Estate is the remaining part of a larger estate planted during the 19th century by Thomas Acton in conjunction with David Moore and his son Sir Frederick Moore, curators of the National Botanic Gardens at that time.

Minister Harris welcomes 2014 OPW Top Twenty Most Visited Sites

Simon Harris, TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) today (16 January 2015) announced another very successful year in terms of visitor numbers to heritage sites managed by the OPW. The top fee paying sites continued to do extremely well with Kilmainham Gaol recording nearly 330,000 visitors, while the Rock of Cashel showed an increase of over 17,000 visitors bringing its visitor numbers to 272,503 in 2014. The introduction of a self guided option for Dublin Castle allowed for a greater throughput of visitors which reached nearly 220,000.
