OPW delighted to exhibit 'Sculpture in Context’ at The Battle of the Boyne, Oldbridge Estate
26 April 17
The Office of Public Works (OPW) in conjunction with Drogheda Arts Festival are delighted to host an exhibition of contemporary Irish sculpture in the Victorian Walled Gardens at the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre, Oldbridge House, as part of its 2017 Event Programme. Mr. Maurice Buckley, Chairman, Office of Public Works will officially open the Exhibition on Wednesday, 26 April.
Mr. Buckley said, “It is my great pleasure to be here today in these wonderful surroundings of the Oldbridge Estate, which is managed by the OPW and provides a magnificent backdrop to this wonderful exhibition. The Exhibition will run from Thursday 27 April to Wednesday 31 May 2017. I recommend attending the Artist led guided tour of the Exhibition on Sunday 30 April at 1.00pm to gain a valuable insight into the works and the various processes used.”
Located in the historic surrounds of Oldbridge House and the Battle of the Boyne site, the works will sit in the herbaceous borders, Octagonal Sunken Garden and amongst Pear and Apple Trees.
The aim of the exhibition is to provide a unique opportunity for exhibiting works in venues outside of the normal gallery context. The artworks produced use a wide range of materials from ceramics to stainless steel, with pieces created, or specifically chosen to reflect their locations within the garden.
The 'Sculpture in Context' Group have previously held exhibitions of their work at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin. The exhibition will display thirty works from artists including Emmett Kane, Richie Healy, Stephen Burke, Jackie Ball, and local artists Brian and Niamh Synnott.
This Exhibition is one of the main highlights of Visual Arts Programme of the Drogheda Arts Festival (24 April - 1 May 2017). The Festival set against the backdrop of the Boyne Valley’s cultural capital, Drogheda, features artists, both local and international, each daring to display, perform, exhibit and lay bare their work in an attempt to amuse, provoke, entertain and inspire you, their audience.
