22-12-2010 - Minister Mansergh Announces Further €187,620 Funding for Flood Relief Works in Co. Galway.

Wednesday December 22nd 2010

PRESS RELEASE

Dr. Martin Mansergh, TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), today announced a further allocation of €187,620 under the OPW's Minor Flood Mitigation Works Scheme to Galway County Council for flood relief works to be carried out in five locations in Co. Galway.

Minister Mansergh said: "I am allocating €187,620 today to Galway County Council for additional works to be carried out to reduce the threat of flooding in some of the areas worst hit around the county.  I am allocating €76,500 for the installation of a drainage channel in Gloves in Athenry.  I am also allocating €18,500 towards the installation of a storm water drainage system to discharge water to an open drain in Cornmucklagh, Ahascragh in Ballinasloe.  Additionally I am allocating €15,120 towards the engagement of a consultant to undertake a conservation impact statement on the removal or repair of sluice gates at the East Bridge on Ballinasloe."

The Minister continued "I am also allocating an additional €38,000 funding for channel maintenance at Crowe Street in Gort and an additional €40,000 for channel maintenance, the replacement of a culvert and the removal of a weir on the Clarin River at Ballydavid, Athenry.  The provision of funding for minor flood mitigation works complements a range of other ongoing OPW programmes, including carrying out major flood relief schemes and flood studies, that are aimed at managing national flood risk in a proactive and comprehensive way into the future".

The Minister concluded: "This allocation of €187,620 brings to €3,712,905 the total sum allocated by my Office this year to different flood mitigation schemes, both coastal and non-coastal, in County Galway.  It is important to remember that it will be open to Local Authorities to submit further applications for funding next year, and all applications that meet the relevant eligibility criteria will be considered having regard to the overall resources available."
