Thank you for taking the time to visit the Office of Public Works website.

In March 2011, I was appointed as a Minister of State by the Taoiseach. My responsibilities are as follows:

  • Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform with special responsibility for Public Service Reform and the Office of Public Works
  • Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for international tax issues and customs reform

The OPW manages State property and State Buildings throughout the country.  It has approximately 2,000 employees in more than 100 locations around Ireland.  The OPW is one of the oldest State bodies in Ireland, having been originally established in August 1831.  The OPW's mission is -  to use our experience and expertise in our mandated areas of operation to provide innovative, effective and sustainable shared services to the public and our clients.  The core functional areas of the Office of Public Works (OPW) relate to Flood Risk Management, Procurement and Estate Portfolio Management.
OPW is an operational arm of Government.  The main functions of the Office are:

  • Provision of a shared service in the area of property management and property maintenance incorporating architectural, engineering, valuation, quantity surveying, project management and facilities management services.
  • Management and preservation of State heritage properties.
  • NPS is a shared service and its function is to achieve greater efficiencies and value for money in the procurement of common goods and services for the Irish public service.
  • Development and delivery of flood risk management work programmes and measures.
  • Management of an effective programme of maintenance of river courses drained under the provisions of the Arterial Drainage Acts.
  • To advise the Government on flood risk management and flood risk management policy.
