Dr. Martin Mansergh, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Finance with responsibility for the Office of Public Works today officially launched the public exhibition stage of the Templemore Flood Relief Scheme.
Speaking at the launch in the Templemore Arms Hotel, Templemore, County Tipperary Dr. Mansergh said “The proposals on display today are the culmination of work undertaken since North Tipperary County Council requested that OPW carry out a study of the problem in Templemore following the 2000 flood event. These proposals mainly involve the building of embankments and walls, regrading and widening parts of the channel, construction of road ramps and the construction of a bypass culvert through the town. The scheme I am launching for public consultation today will protect properties in Templemore against a flood with a 1% probability of occurring in any given year, commonly known as the 100 year flood event. This is a high level of protection and is widely recognised by flooding authorities as the appropriate standard of protection for schemes of this nature, where it can be achieved.”
The Minister continued “I am very happy to say that in these difficult financial times, the Government has allowed OPW to increase its expenditure on flood relief activities this year. So, let me assure you that OPW will progress this scheme as quickly as possible.”
