PRESS RELEASE
Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Dr. Martin Mansergh TD, today announced that the Office of Public Works (OPW) has placed a contract for the second phase of the Munster Blackwater (Mallow) Drainage Scheme.
Minister Mansergh said: 'I am delighted to announce today that the OPW have placed a contract for the second phase of the Mallow scheme. The second phase consists of the Munster Blackwater (Mallow South) Drainage Scheme and the Munster Blackwater (Mallow West) Drainage Scheme with both schemes being undertaken as one contract.
The contract, to the value of €6.1 million has been awarded to BAM Civil Ltd. and is to be completed within a period of 18 months. The OPW expect work on the second phase to commence in six to eight weeks with an overall project budget of €14 million.
Works on the first phase, Munster Blackwater (Mallow North) Flood Relief Scheme commenced in March 2008 and are now 98% complete. The November 2009 flood saw the demountable defences being erected for the first time and proved a resounding success. Numerous properties would previously have flooded to a depth of almost 1 metre from such a flood event. The Scheme has received much praise following that event, which caused such hardship throughout other parts of the country.
When completed, the full scheme for Mallow will bring flood protection to approximately 230 properties, in addition to the centre of the town."
