Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Dr. Martin Mansergh, TD, announced today that he has allocated funding of €3.85m for works to reduce flooding from the Dunkellin River, Co. Galway.
Minister Mansergh said: "When I visited this area during the severe flooding last winter and saw the hardship suffered by the people there, I promised my full support for the efforts to help avoid a recurrence".
"I am pleased to be able to announce that the scheme that has been agreed by the Joint OPW / Galway County Council Working Group will now proceed with funding from my Office", the Minister said.
The planning process for the Dunkellin River will begin immediately with a view to commencing works in Summer 2011, subject to satisfactory completion of the planning process.
The feasibility of commencing elements of works on the Aggard Stream and Cregaclare in advance of the main scheme will be pursued by the Joint Working Group.
Dr Mansergh said: "I would like to thank the Joint Working Group for its prompt actions to date on this matter and to assure the people of the area of my commitment to ensuring the full assistance of my Office in implementing the required mitigation measures".
"The works will be carried out by my Office on behalf of the Council", the Minister added.
