Mansergh Welcomes Dunkellin River Consultants Report

Tuesday June 15th, 2010

PRESS RELEASE

Dr. Martin Mansergh, Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works, today welcomed the completion of a consultants' report in relation to flooding along the Dunkellin River.

"This report was commissioned by the OPW in order to identify practical measures that could be taken forward to reduce the likelihood of a recurrence of the widespread flooding caused by the very severe weather in the area in late 2009", the Minister said.

The Minister went on to say that the report will now be considered by the Joint OPW / Galway County Council Working Group that was set up in the wake of the 2009 flooding. The Joint Working Group will, having considered the consultants report, identify the most appropriate measures to address flood risk in the short and medium term, and will also identify the statutory consents necessary to implement the report's recommendations.

"I expect to receive the Joint Working Group's recommendations in relation to the consultants' report before the end of June", said Minister Mansergh.

Minister Mansergh also said that a separate consultants report in relation to flooding along the Clare River will be completed on June 25th, and the Joint Working Group will make recommendations in relation to its findings in early July.

Dr Mansergh said: "'I wish to assure those affected by flooding in both these areas of my continuing commitment, and that of the Government, to providing the necessary resources for the implementation of the recommendations of the Joint Working Group".

Ends.
