PRESS RELEASE
Dr. Martin Mansergh, TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works, today announced the opening times for 2010 for Heritage Sites under the ambit of the Office of Public Works, where a Guide Service is in operation.
The Minister said “The opening arrangements at all Heritage Sites nationwide have been reviewed in the light of current economic circumstances. Most seasonal sites will open earlier this year to coincide with Easter. We have managed to maintain the balance between conservation, preservation and tourism needs and budgetary realities, and secured an extension of the season at a number of important regional sites”.
The Minister continued “The importance and cultural significance of OPW Heritage Sites throughout the country cannot be overstated, and I note with satisfaction that visitor numbers increased at several of our sites during 2009. Ormond Castle in Tipperary, New Mills in Donegal and Listowel Castle in Kerry are just some examples of sites that received more visitors last year. We can all play our part in bringing visitors, family and friends to places that are all worth visiting, not just once but many times”.
