PRESS RELEASE
An Illustrated History of the Phoenix Park, Landscape and Management to 1880 by Dr. John A. McCullen
The Office of Public Works (OPW) today published a new book on the Phoenix Park. Entitled “An Illustrated History of the Phoenix Park, Landscape and Management to 1880”, the book is written by Dr. John A. McCullen, one of the country’s foremost experts on the history of the Phoenix Park and resident OPW Superintendent of the Park since 1984.
Launching the book in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dr. Martin Mansergh, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Finance with responsibility for the Office of Public Works said “The need to research the landscape history and management of the Phoenix Park became apparent to John when he was preparing the first Management Plan for the Phoenix Park in 1986. Very little had been written on the landscape history and management of the Phoenix Park and what had been written relied on earlier secondary sources with little new material being added… In the early 1990s John began to explore the possibility of undertaking a PhD on the landscape history and management of the Phoenix Park. I would like to congratulate John on his wonderful achievement in producing this great historical document and have great pleasure in recommending the book to you all both for its text and pictures. I am quite sure that it will be a standard and essential reference work long into the future”.
The book is an all Irish production, commissioned by the Office of Public Works, designed by Paul Martin Communications, printed by Walsh Colour Print, Co. Kerry and bound by Celtic Press, Dundalk. The book is on sale in the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, Ashtown and in the Government Publications Office, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2 or by mail order from the Government Publications, Postal Trade Section, 51 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2 (Tel 01-6476834/35/36/37 or Fax 01-6476843). The book will also shortly be available in major booksellers.
