Dr. Martin Mansergh, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Finance with responsibility for the Office of Public Works today signed the contract for the John’s River (Waterford) Flood Relief Scheme.
Speaking at the signing Minister Mansergh said, “Today we are here to mark the commencement of Phases 2 and 3 of the John’s River Flood Relief Scheme, by appointing BAM Construction to carry out advanced works. Phase 1 works on the River Suir upstream of its confluence with John’s River and on John’s River northern bank, to Hardy’s Bridge are progressing well, as is the preliminary planning design for Phase 2, 3 and 4 being carried out by RPS Consulting Engineers in consultation with Waterford City Council. The further works will comprise of the construction of new embankments, new permanent walls and the provision of flood gates”.
The Minister continued, “OPW are happy to be in partnership with Waterford City Council, and wish to acknowledge their continuing commitment to the Flood Defence Scheme. Indeed, OPW are in consultation with various Local Authorities around the country, working towards providing flood protection to many towns beleaguered by flooding. Only last month, I attended a contract-signing to mark the commencement of works in Fermoy North, and am also pleased to say that works in Mallow North have been completed, and works are also nearing completion on the first phases of the Clonmel and Ennis Flood Relief Schemes. Procurement has already commenced on the next phases of these Schemes, and it is this phased approach that is also being applied in Waterford”.
