Managing Flood Risk

Through its historical powers and duties under the relevant legislation, its new role following the national flood policy review, and the adoption of the 'Floods' Directive, the OPW is coordinating and implementing a comprehensive national flood risk management programme.

The programme follows a strategy with four core themes:

Strategic Information Development: The development of the necessary flood hazard and risk information, including associated research, to permit effective decision-making.

Flood Risk Management Planning: The identification of flood hazard and risk and strategic planning of flood risk management operational programmes

Operational Programmes: The delivery of flood risk management measures, including flood relief schemes, non-structural measures and programme and arterial drainage maintenance

Effective and Efficient Programme Delivery: Ensuring the optimised targeting and delivery of the national flood risk management programme in terms of capital investments and the use of human and financial resources.
